Detroit spirits may have a reputation for amazing beer and wines, but the state also produces some of the best spirits. A growing number of distillers are putting a Michigan spin on the classics, including vodka, gin, whiskey and brandy.

Located in a former taxi garage in Corktown, Two James Spirits was the city’s first distillery since Prohibition. The business, launched by friends Peter Bailey and David Landrum, has quickly become a favorite of local cocktail enthusiasts. The owners took advantage of a law passed a few years ago that allows small, boutique distillers to operate without the need for a license or permit.

Named World’s Best Vodka at the 2016 World Drinks Awards in London, this smooth vodka is distilled and filtered through activated coconut charcoal before being blended with artesian alkaline Michigan spring water. Try it on the rocks or in a cocktail.

While most of the bourbon produced at Long Road Distillery is barrel-aged, this young rye taps into the natural flavors of the Michigan forest. It’s a refreshing sip on its own or perfect in a Manhattan, Old Fashioned or Julep.
